The debate continues if we are actually seeing an end to the recession and when the staggering unemployment rates will turn around. The experts can’t seem to disagree. And while it may not be a scientific indicator, sales at TestCounty.com, an online company that provides workplace testing and screening services, may point to some good news.
After a steady year, with little or no substantial growth, TestCounty saw a 22 percent increase in pre-employment drug testing requests during March 2010 compared to same time last year. “This is the first double-digit increase we’ve seen in more than 18 months,” says Serhat Pala, president of the company that operates TestCountry.com. “Perhaps it means that companies are once again looking to hire more people. The increase has been across different industries and not necessarily limited to construction or retail industries that usually creates seasonal employment activities.”
According to statistics by the National Institute on Drug Addiction, drug abusing employees cost businesses money. Nearly 75 percent of adult illicit drug users have job. However, they are more likely to be late or absent from work, less productive, have workplace accidents and file workers’ compensation claims.
