Needle free drug delivery systems or needle free injections were developed in the 1930s and were used for small pox, measles and polio vaccinations. These devices used mechanical compression to force the fluid to penetrate into the skin. The early systems used propellant gases to force the solution through the skin; an example is the carbon dioxide gas cartridge. A needle free injection system consists of an injection device, an air cartridge and a disposable needle free syringe. The injection device and the disposable syringe are made up of plastic and the syringe is the only system that comes in contact with the skin.
