Conventionally, solid tumors have been treated with systemic chemotherapy, surgical resection, and local radiation. For kidney tumors the standard surgical treatment is open or partial nephrectomy. However these conventional surgical options have the drawbacks of being invasive, requiring long hospitalization and being painful. However over the past decade, the scene has altered with a growing trend towards minimally invasive treatment options. Radio Frequency (RF) and cryo-ablation are the most popular and acceptable forms of tumor ablation with newer techniques like High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and radiation gaining acceptance.
