The Guardian has recently written that as many as three million people who took out payment protection insurance (PPI) could be entitled to compensation after the Financial Services Authority (FSA) issued new rules on how firms should handle mis-selling complaints. The total amount of compensation consumers could be entitled is estimated to be between £2bn and £2.7bn.
The FSA is currently being inundated with complaints, on average 2,000 per week, as more and more victims of PPI mis-selling are being directed to the ombudsman by the financial sector rather than solving the problem internally. Where a case goes before the ombudsman, as many as 4 out of 5 are settled in favour of the claimant with the average payout in the region of £2,500 – although many are significantly higher.
