"solicitors, solicitor, find a solicitor"

Never has a government promised so much and of such importance in civil liberty terms. The idealism and promise of the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Manifesto has come out to fight against the encroachment that we have suffered at the hands of previous governments.

The agreement that has come out from the Lib-Con coalition has proposed a large number changes. Identity cards will be scrapped saving costs. Further to that, the libel laws will be removed so that libel tourism is discouraged and freedom of speech is protected. The Freedom of Information Act is also being extended to allow for more transparency in the system.

The statute book will also get a spring clean. The British Bill of Rights looks to not be implemented, but there will be a Freedom or Great Repeal Bill will be drafted. Its exact contents and goals have not been outlined as of yet, but there is plenty that could be proposed.

In addition to this, the Tories have proposed enshrining the principle of trial by jury so that justice can be truly served by society. There are concerns that this could be seen to be promoting social justice and law, but time will tell if this is the case.

The National Identity register is also marching the way of ID cards, along with the next generation of biometric passports. And speaking of marching, the right to non violent protest that was taken away by the pervious Labour government will be fully restored.

Our privacy and rights will receive further protection with safeguards being put in place that protect us from the misuse of anti-terrorism laws and further regulation of CCTV. The practise of storing internet and email records without good reason will be scrapped too.

Since 1997, there has been over 3000 offences created and the new coalition government seem to want to put a stop to that. A new mechanism will be put forward that will “prevent the proliferation of unnecessary new criminal offences”.

Isabella Sankey, Director of Policy at Liberty, has responded to these proposals by saying that "Liberty has always found ID cards offensive to our privacy, purses and race relations. We congratulate the new Coalition Government on this historic commitment and look forward to early legislation scrapping ID cards for everyone in Britain, regardless of age, race or nationality."
