"Social Media Marketing"

October 14, 2010 - A recent study by Get Response showed that e-mail messages that included the option of sharing content on social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, significantly increases total click-throughs. The study of 500 million e-mails sent showed e-mails that included the Facebook and Twitter share options generated a 30% higher click-through rate than e-mails without them.

Natalie Regoli, the CEO of the social media marketing agency ViralSO.com, took the time to answer a few questions about what this really means to businesses and their marketing campaigns.

Why do you think this trend is occurring?

The internet has been making a major shift over the past three years towards bidirectional engagement. In 2007, the majority of all marketing campaigns focused on the “push model.“ The “push model” is the process of pushing out your ad with the single goal of getting a purchase. Now with Facebook and Twitter leading the way, consumers are demanding engagement from businesses. By having the Facebook and Twitter icons, the email is signaling to the consumer that this business is attempting to engage them.

Does this also apply to having icons on the company website?

Yes, it does. Businesses have been using badges from Better Business Bureau for many years to get new visitors to instantly trust their site. The same perceptual recognition occurs when a new visitor sees the Facebook and Twitter badge. It is a simple way for the visitor to separate the bad guys from the good guys. The scammers and fraudulent businesses do not want to engage users. If they did, then the word would instantly spread across Facebook and Twitter.

Where do you see this trend going in the future?

Right now there are only 11% of businesses using the Twitter and Facebook share features within their email campaigns. Over the next two years, this will become a standard and go beyond 50%. At that point, having links to Facebook and Twitter within the email will also become a major factor in spam filter programs.
