It is normal for everyone to sweat. The body perspires to remove excess heat and maintain its normal temperature. But things get unpleasant when it happens in excess. It can be a cause of personal problems and social embarrassment, thereby affecting the quality of life of the person affected and requires immediate attention, sometimes medical in nature. It can even be hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is a term for a medical condition. In this, the person sweats excessively. This ‘excessive’ sweating can be throughout the body or localized to specific body parts such as palms, soles etc. The most common parts affected are hands, feet, armpits and the groin area.

Hyperhidrosis is a very widespread disease affecting millions of people across the world. Some studies even pin the figure at 3% of the entire world population. It is caused by a problem with the hypothalamus, the portion of the brain responsible for regulating the sweat produced by the body. Other causes include heredity, diabetes mellitus, tumors, gout, menopause, certain drugs and mercury poisoning.

There are a host of treatments available for curing hyperhidrosis. However, it is generally advised to go for natural treatments before going in for other measure such as corrective surgeries. Many people use deodorants and antiperspirants to combat the problem. While these might provide immediate relief from the problem, but they are not long term solutions as they do not address the root cause of the problem. Also, there are other problems associated with using deodorants such as breast cancer, as suggested by some studies. These problems also include presence of stains and clogging the pores of the skin.

Doctors also suggest other methods to fight hyperhidrosis. While some might recommend anti-cholinergic drugs, most suggest surgery as an option. In this, the overactive sweat glands are removed surgically. However, there are a whole lot of problems associated with the removal. One type of surgery used to cure underarm sweating is endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) but causes ‘compensatory sweating’ in other parts of the body such as thighs and back. Thus, one needs to think well before embarking on a treatment.
