"Renewable Energy Certificates"

In 2009, India is the fourth largest green house gas emitter in the world as the majority of electricity produced in the country is from conventional sources such as coal. The power sector is the largest contributor towards carbon emissions in the country followed by the transportation sector. Carbon emissions in India increased from 1,032.7 million metric tons in 2001 to 1,593 in 2009, registering an increase of 54.3%. Being the second most populous country in the world, India’s per capita emissions are about 70% lower than the world average with high level of total emissions. With economic growth the green house gas emissions (GHG) emission in the country are expected to rise even further. As India is a developing economy, it is highly vulnerable to the negative effects of global warming like rising sea levels and alterations in the annual monsoons. Furthermore, India refused to accept any legally binding emission reduction targets and sign any agreement stipulating the peak year for emissions during the international talks on climate change in Copenhagen.

Even though India refused to accept legal bindings, the country plans to reduce its carbon emissions by improving its energy efficiency. In December 2009, the country announced its plan to reduce its carbon emission intensity by 20-25% from 2005 levels by 2020. Emission intensity is emission level per unit of economic output. This target implies that the emissions will continue to increase as the country continues to growth economically but the rise in emissions will be at a decelerating rate.
