Europe and Asia-Pacific Guide the Growth of Refinery Hydrocracking Market
Hyderabad, AP, India (prbd.net) 12/04/2011
The global refinery hydrocracking market grew at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 5.7% for the period 2000–2010. The hydrocracking capacity increased from 221.2 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) in 2000 to 393.1 MMtpa in 2010. This increase was led by the growth of the Asia-Pacific and European markets. The Asia-Pacific refinery hydrocracking market increased from 51.1 MMtpa in 2000 to 128.8 MMtpa in 2010 at an AAGR of 9.2%. In the same period, the hydrocracking capacity of Europe increased from 56.2 MMtpa to 118.8 MMtpa at an AAGR of 7.5%.

China leads the capacity addition in the hydrocracking market for the period 2010–2015. It has decided to increase its hydrocracking capacity by 9.8 MMtpa. The Russian Federation has planned to increase its hydrocracking capacity by 8.8 MMtpa. The other countries which have plans for capacity addition are the Islamic Republic of Iran, the US and the Republic of Korea. The hydrocracking capacity additions by these countries are 7.1 MMtpa, 6 MMtpa and 5.7 MMtpa, respectively.

With more importance given to diesel-driven vehicles, the demand for diesel in the European market has increased. The increasing demand for diesel has forced the region to increase its hydrocracking capacity. The European region will see a capacity addition of 21.6 MMtpa for the period 2010─2015. The other regions of the world will see lesser additions than the capacity additions in the European region. Asia-Pacific will see a capacity addition of 17.5 MMtpa for the same period.

The stringent emission standards that have been implemented in many developed nations for vehicles have ensured that fuel produced from refining processes has improved in quality and is cleaner. The Euro V standard for the usage of Ultra-low-Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) ensures that the content of sulfur in the fuel is less than 10 parts per million (ppm), something which has been achieved through upgraded petrochemical production. The setting up of advanced units capable of meeting these production requirements requires investment from operators or owners. Huge investments towards this have helped in the setting up of more hydrocracking units globally, and also in enhancing the quality of the fuel produced by refineries.
