While mainstream photographers are creating casual snapshot-style portraits, he is taking his art in an entirely different direction. His portraits go beyond showing what someone looks like and tells the viewer something about the subject’s personality.

"The classical portrait has been around for hundreds of years," says Lourcey. "There is a simple elegance to it that just cannot be achieved with photojournalism."

Creating these masterpieces is no easy task. They require a great deal of work not only during the session, but before and after the session. Lourcey first interviews the subject to find out how to best represent their personality and their unique traits. From there, he uses dramatic lighting and classic posing to give the image an exciting, but timeless feel. "I don’t want an image to be dated by the background I use or the outfits that they wear” he says. “The portrait should look just as beautiful a hundred years from now as it does today."

What really sets Lourcey apart is the final step- painting. He typically spends three to four hours adding brushstrokes and texture to the image, giving it the look of a Renaissance painting. When the final image is printed on canvas, the results are usually shocking. "I typically have people start crying when they see the final portrait" says Lourcey. "You can’t ask for a bigger compliment than that."
