Despite the threat to environment and biodiversity, the government is planning for no less than 12 power and mining projects in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, the mango capital of Maharashtra. This week Reportaaz takes a trip to the Konkan belt to delve deeper into this looming threat to the environment. A number of mega projects along the Konkan coast in Maharashtra are under public scrutiny. The Konkan coast has maintained its pristine nature to a great degree. Mangroves, mudflats and breeding sites of fish, turtle and birds flourish here. The Maharashtra government's decision to industrialize the Konkan is not in tandem with its recognition of the area as a region of rich biodiversity. Had it had been one power plant, it might have worked but setting up as many as 12 plans will have a swelling effect. The two districts, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg currently generate close to 3,000 MW of electricity with the existing power plants. With zero theft of electricity, the farmers of the region consume only approximately 180 MW of electricity. The fear is that the new projects will irrevocably damage the eco-system by killing the fish and contaminating the water, which will ultimately affect the production of mangoes from the region.
Although the need for development is felt, there has to be a way of working things out to make sure it does not come at the cost of our environment. This week, Reportaaz brings to the views and opinions of environmentalists and villagers with regards to this development.
