Mesothelioma Concerns Arise For Dental Technicians Due To Occupational Asbestos Exposure

There are concerns about the development of mesothelioma in the dental industry, caused by the traditional use of asbestos in the casting process.

The dental industry is yet another field in which asbestos was regularly used, and this has caused anxiety among dental technicians and dentists, especially after the death of a technician has been attributed to occupational exposure.

The substance that was so commonly used has been directly linked to the contraction of mesothelioma – a type of cancer that affects the lining of many of the body’s major organs – which is caused by inhalation of small fibres. Asbestos was traditionally used in the casting process in the production of casting rings for example, and dental technicians carrying out such work were repeatedly exposed to it, thereby increasing their chances of contracting an asbestos related disease in the future.

The death of a dental technician in 2009 brought this concern to the fore, and this was reported on http://www.dentistry.co.uk:

“Edward Seviour, a keen cyclist, died in August 2009 at the age of 73. He had been a dental technician all his life, first entering a laboratory at the age of 13 and working in a lab until he retired. The dental equipment he worked with is believed to have contained the asbestos.”

This website states that Mr Seviour was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2008 and that a post-mortem found “numerous asbestos fibres” in his lungs. The coroner told an inquest that the number of asbestos fibres in Mr Seviour’s lungs was well above average and a verdict of industrial disease was settled on.

This case illustrates that concerns in the dental industry related to occupational asbestos exposure are justified.
