The new IIMs which have started functioning since the last one year are setting up their own methods of doing things which the veteran IIMs have not done over the years. Take for instance, the Joint Admission Process adopted for admissions 2011. The initiative was taken by IIM Ranchi and IIM Rohtak, which were also in charge of the process. The other new IIMs, IIM Raipur and IIM Trichy took part in it.

At a recent discussion at the MBAUniverse.com Indian Management Conclave 2011, IIM Ranchi and IIM Rohtak directors talked about the success of the process and expressed their eagerness to continue with the joint admissions process for Admissions 2012 as well, and that too with improvements. IIM Ranchi Director Dr. MJ Xavier and IIM Rohtak Director Dr. P Rameshan informed the gathering that they will do away with the GD process and replace it with a written exercise. Personal interview will continue to be a part of the process.

According to Dr. Rameshan, the candidates will get around 15 to 20 minutes time to write on a particular topic or a case study. “The score will be applicable for all the participating IIMs of the Joint Admission Process.”

Over the years, GD is gradually getting shunned by the IIMs. In the existing 13 IIMs, only IIM Calcutta has the GD process. The other IIMs have the Essay Writing or Written Ability test and Personal Interview rounds.

Describing the need for the Joint Admission Process for the new IIMs, Dr. Rameshan said, “When the three new IIMs came up last year, we had difficulty due to lack of resources in conducting GD PI. We did not have many faculty members. So it came as a necessity for us to conduct a combined GD PI process.”

For the admission of the year 2012-14, the joint admissions process will be headed by IIM Ranchi. Both Dr. Xavier and Dr. Rameshan agreed to the fact that the new IIMs have more synergy and coordination among themselves. “We do not have the competitive attitude amongst us. We aim to be cooperative which will be more beneficial for our development. Even the HRD ministry encourages this collaboration,” exclaimed Dr. M J Xavier.
