Arlington, Texas ( prbd ) October 28, 2011 - Information Support Concepts, an online supplier of telecom data center products since 1987, offers a selection of reliable power distribution products (PDU) to deliver conditioned power to mission-critical networks.

Essentially, a PDU is a power strip ( http://www.iscdfw.com/ ) designed to deliver continuous power in a network environment. Popular types of PDU systems include:

- Basic power distribution units—Provides reliable power distribution to multiple pieces of equipment in a network. A basic PDU ( http://www.iscdfw.com/ ) provides outlets for the devices installed into a rack enclosure from a conditioned power source.

- Metered power distribution units—Expands on the basic PDU features by delivering the ability to monitor the amount of current that flows through it.

- Switched power distribution units—Offers metered capability as well as the ability to remotely control each outlet via a network connection. These devices can be powered-down during a power outage to enable servers and networking equipment to run from backup battery power.

How power distribution units are used.

PDUs are placed in rack enclosures , either in a zero rack space (a vertical format) or in a one or two rack space with a horizontal form factor. Most PDUs offer a 10-15-ft. input cord option to connect to a distant power source.

Feature-rich PDUs.

Some PDUs offer additional features such as temperature and humidity monitoring that will provide an alert if out of tolerance settings.

The need for PDUs.
In metered applications, the PDU allows network managers to track the amount of power the equipment is consuming and determine when to add more electrical capacity or larger UPS systems to support the network’s needs.

- AC and DC-powered PDUs have different connectors, so make sure to select the PDU needed to match your AC or DC power supply.

- Though budget may be a factor, don't skimp on quality. Look for industry certifications such as UL and a powder-coated metal chassis instead of plastic and confirm the manufacturer has a track record for reliability.

- For small deployments, find a solution with a web interface, which allows access and control from any network-connected PC. Also, look for a PDU that allows you to remotely reboot equipment on a per-port basis without the need to toggle the entire unit.

- Large organizations require SNMP-capable PDUs, which enables power control as part of an industry-standard SNMP management system.
