Dallas, TX - November 10, 2011 -- With the high school’s Black Box Theatre filled with supporters, The Westwood School recently celebrated its gift of a Confucius Classroom, part of an initiative by the Chinese Ministry of Education to make Chinese language instruction and cultural studies available to students through college-level around the globe. The program provides funding for Westwood’s Mandarin teachers, classes, textbooks, a library, and other opportunities.

Dr. Guohua Yan, Chief Consul of Education, The Consulate General of People's Republic of China in Houston, was present for these ceremonies that included Mandarin performances by lower elementary and high school students, as well as a bi-lingual welcome from high school students Dayton Blankenship and Melody Tam, a Chinese exchange student, culminated in a Signing Ceremony in the new Confucius Classroom.

Commenting on the importance of learning about a culture so rich and different from our own, Westwood guest Dr. Dennis Kratz, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at The University of Texas at Dallas, said, “The future will bring the United States and China much closer together to form a culture of harmony and collaboration that will make this world a better place.”
