Rheumatoid Arthritis and Depression - Medication Free
"I had Rheumatoid Arthritis. You can do whatever you want, except live."
Kelowna, B.C., January 3rd, 2012 - At age 11 Danielle Downs was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. By age 13 Ms. Downs was in a wheelchair. With help from the best private medical care from across Canada and Europe, Ms. Downs was able to play sports and graduate from high school as a high honours student. Her first semester at UBCO saw her achieve academic distinction as she earned Dean's list status.
Over the following three years the Rheumatoid Arthritis began to overtake her life. As a result, this once vibrant young girl struggled with severe depression. Debilitating, chronic pain became so acute that she was unable to complete her degree (only 6 classes shy of graduation). She couldn't hold a permanent job and her favourite activity, playing soccer, was no longer possible. Ms. Down's had exhausted all traditional modalities but her chronic illness only got more difficult, "I was a girl who lived in constant pain. And I can't explain how hard that was".
Her prayers to live a vibrant life were answered when she discovered NeurVana - an innovative recovery and wellness program for youth and young adults. After just 12 days in NeurVana's program Ms. Downs stated, "I woke up this morning and I didn't feel any pain. And I remember coming to NeurVana and saying that I don't know what it would be like to not feel any painand now I do! And now I just cry happy tears. It's so cool. It's unbelievable. You have the whole day in front of you. And it's beautiful".
Upon graduation from NeurVana's innovative program Ms. Downs said, "I feel alive. I don't feel drugged anymore". She continued, "I want to get up now. I want to make the absolute most of everything, because I couldn't and now I can. And you live with this supreme amount of gratitude. This is a mind, body, spirit transformation".
Ms. Downs has continued to live medication free and is filled with passion and energy again. She is working and is re-enrolled to UBCO and will complete her degree in 2012. She actively works out at CrossFit Glenmore. And she has returned to playing soccer again - scoring her team's only goal in her come-back game!
