Results of study published recently in Spine Magazine show that heat wrap therapy – using equipment such as heating mats to apply heat directly to problem areas – is more effective for relieving lower back pain than drugs such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

Researchers reported that the heat wrap therapy offered much higher levels of pain relief when compared to oral painkillers. Pain relief started from the first day of treatment and continued for more than 48 hours after the treatment was completed.

Heat therapy is non-invasive and does not come with the same associated risk of toxicity or potential damage to the liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract when compared to analgesic or oral painkillers. As well as relief from pain, heating mats, heat pads and infrared heat lamps can provide increased muscle flexibility and relaxation for the pain sufferer, which oral painkillers do not.

The use of heat pads, heating mats and infrared heat lamps has long been recommended by therapists for pain relief in conditions such as joint and back pain. In such treatments as aromatherapy, heat is often used to aid relaxation of the muscles and to complement and bring out the scent in the oils.

Aromatherapy is a well known and respected method of holistic therapy that involves using essential oils (oils extracted from plants) for therapeutic benefit, including relieving back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain – some of the most common pain conditions reported. The use of heat therapy methods, including infrared heat lamps, is common, and assists with the therapeutic process.
Some of the additional associated benefits of aromatherapy include: an enhanced sense of wellbeing; an improvement in health; a more balanced emotional state; improved relaxation; a boost to the body’s natural immune system; and improvements to the body’s respiratory and circulatory systems.
Another form of drug free pain relief which has successfully been used for many years by medical professionals and patients worldwide is TENS pain relief (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). TENS pain relief involves the application of small electrical pulses to the body, through the skin. The treatment penetrates deep into the affected area to deliver an effective pain therapy in the comfort of your home. TENS pain relief is often used to assist in the management of pain during childbirth. A maternity TENS machine allows for a highly accurate and adjustable level of pain relief at the touch of a button, and is often used by mothers who do not wish to take oral, injected or inhaled drugs for the relief of pain during labour.
