It has been reported that in Lincolnshire the number of cases of life threatening domestic violence has almost doubled.

There have been more than 5,000 complaints recorded by the Police in Lincolnshire in the last six months.

This has been blamed on the recession and the tough economic climate leading to families and perpetrators feeling under immense financial pressure. Figures have show that of the 5,000 incidents reported, 730 were referred to the serious case group Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) in the 12 months to March 2012, compared to 403 in the previous year.

The MARAC manages cases that are very serious and often life-threatening and often the victim's physical or psychological recover can be extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. Figures have shown that there has been a marked increase in repeat victims from 101 to 200 over the last year, leading to many of the country's top councillors pushing for the issue to be tackled before it gets out of control.

"Domestic violence has been happening for centuries, let's not make excuses for it such as the economic climate, unfortunately there are lots of people who are struggling to make ends meet at the moment, and for those that are in relationships they are not all violent or abusive towards their partners.

"I believe that the increase in the figures is more likely due to awareness raising and a raised confidence to approach an agency or organisation, as opposed to an increase in people becoming violent or abusive, it should be seen as positive that victims are coming from behind the closed doors, let's hope the agencies are in a position to help and support them when they do"
