Scientists are warning that some European mice have evolved to develop a strong resistance to the strongest poisons available on the market today. This is particularly the case in Spain and Germany, where mice have rapidly evolved by breeding with other species and until now, they have been separate for over a million years causing a gene transfer.

Scientists have identified that the mix between these German and Spanish mice with the Algerian species is creating a completely new species that are resistant to proven pest control methods, in particular the position, which is a derivative of the drug Warfarin. Too much of this drug can be fatal and lead to internal bleeding, and it was introduced as a pesticide over 50 years ago and used successfully ever since.

This new species of mice has developed a resistance to common poisons over a very short period of time. They don't look any different to other household mice, but have a different genetic code, which means that they are able to survive the strongest chemicals used in pest control.

Researchers believe that increased travel and growth in population are responsible for these mice being exposed to each other and that if this continues they could be impossible to control.

Akeel Jaffar runs HLA Pest Control in London. HLA Pest Control is London's leading Pest Control Specialist, and is a member of the British Pest Control Association and winner of the National Pest Technician Association Awards. He says:

"In London we aren't currently seeing any incidents of mice that are immune to the chemicals we use. We have had no issues with mice becoming immune to the poisons that we currently have access to. In addition, many of the chemicals used by professionals are unavailable for people to use themselves when trying to tackle mice, rats or other pests at home without the help of professionals or pest control specialists. It's important that if you do have a problem with mice, that you call a pest control company immediately. Mice breed at an alarming rate and at the first sign it's essential that you seek the right advice. There will rarely just be one or two mice in your home or office, so it's important to investigate how serious the problem is. Mice are a health hazard and can spread disease and cause serious illness especially to the young and elderly. We have a one hour response time and can help to tackle your mice problem and offer advice on the best poisons to tackle the problem effectively and permanently"
