You have probably made and perhaps even broken resolutions for the New Year. When making resolutions, did you think about your pets? After all, they depend on you to keep them healthy, safe, and happy. As an important member of your family, your pets play a vital role in your life. Therefore, you should commit to keeping pets healthy in 2013 and take steps to ensure that your dogs, cats, and other pets receive the optimal care that they deserve.

Like any other year, you need to protect your pets from various diseases and pests. Make sure your pets go to the vet regularly to receive their shots. You should also treat them for fleas and heart worm on a regular basis. Other necessary treatments will depend on where you live and what type of pet you have. Talk to your veterinarian to ensure your pet is receiving the preventative care that it needs.

One particular pest that you should be aware of this year is ticks. Though ticks have been an issue for pets and their owners for ages, they are expected to be especially problematic in 2013. In recent years, ticks have been found in rampant numbers, and have also been discovered in areas previously thought to be free from them. This growing trend is expected to continue this year. Ticks can carry serious diseases, most notably Lyme disease, which is dangerous for both pets and humans. Therefore, make sure you give your pets a preventative for ticks, especially if they spend a lot of times outdoors. Furthermore, you should inspect their coats for ticks when you brush them. Even if you think that ticks are not a problem in your area, it is something to be vigilant about this year.

Proper diet has always been an essential component to keeping your pets healthy. This year, it will become even easier to give your pets the great, fresh food that they deserve. Many companies are coming out with fresh meals for pets. These fresh meals currently are or will be available in a refrigerated section of many grocery stores and pet stores. They are made with fresh, delicious ingredients that your pets crave. They are a great alternative to traditional dry food, as they more closely resemble what an animal would eat in the wild. Such meals reduce or eliminate ingredients like preservatives and corn, which are nonessential for pet health.

Like humans, pets can suffer from obesity. Pet obesity is an issue that is likely to take the spotlight more in 2013. Luckily, there are solutions. Of course, taking your pet for regular walks is great exercise for both of you, and it can be a fun family activity. Also, make sure you are not overfeeding your pet. Lastly, there are many daycare centers for pets that can help them increase their activity level. Remember your pet is part of your family; resolve to make sure he or she receives the best care possible to ensure a long and healthy life.
