This week Pedal-Pedal has taken delivery of the newly launched foldable cycle helmet from Carrera (1) that not only looks unbelievably cool and is genuinely comfortable, but is also reassuringly safe. Made in 7 bright colours, the brand new design is refreshingly modern, easy to wear and, of course, foldable, which makes it easy to put away when not in use - safety comes as a given as it is EE 1078 certified(2).
The main difference with the Carrera Foldable Helmet is that instead of being 'moulded' from a single piece of EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) like most helmets, it's made from five separate strips that sit front to rear and which are held together with elastic; comfortably hugging your head in a way that no pre-formed polystyrene bowl can ever do. When not being worn it compresses into approximately two thirds of its original size so the helmet is easily stowed when not in use. And, as you would expect for a product from a company as well-known as Carrera, the helmet satisfies all the required EE health and safety requirements - certified for use by pedal cyclists and users of skateboards and roller skates; EN 1078.

The foldable element is further enhanced by the provision of a nylon strap which as well as holding the helmet closed when not being worn, can also be used as an ankle band to keep your trouser leg from getting oiled by the chain.
Designed with the urban cyclist in mind, it is expected that anyone who rides a bicycle apart from the out and out road racers will be wearing them; commuters, occasional riders, mountain bikers and touring cyclists. With two sizes (ranging from 54cms to 61cms), the Foldable Helmet is priced as a mid-range helmet with a recommended retail price of £60.
