Trying to decide on a costume for Halloween can seem a bit daunting. There are thousands of options to choose from.

There are four basic categories that seem to be the most popular. These categories are princesses, super heroes, historical figures and villains. To choose a Halloween costume it might be best to select one of these four categories and then try to narrow it down from there.
Princesses
Whether she is very young or in her twilight years, every girl dreams of being a princess. These types of Halloween costumes seem to be most popular in girls’ 12 years old and younger and women in their late 20s to early 40s. Of course the Disney princesses are always the most popular with Cinderella and Belle topping the list. This year however, we have a new princess, Tiana who is fastly becoming one of the most popular Halloween costume ideas for 2010.
Stepping outside the Disney genre, medieval and renaissance princesses are very popular Halloween costumes . The costumes are very elegant and quite colorful. They are very popular amongst women in their 40s and 50s. In addition, many women will spend quite a bit of money and invest in an authentic and well-made costume that they can wear year after year. The medieval or renaissance princess will never go out of style.
Super Heroes
Super Heroes have always been quite popular, with the all time favorites of both men and boys being Superman and Batman. Recently some new super heroes have become quite popular and are great Halloween costumes for 2010. Iron Man is the newest of the super heroes and is in high demand amongst men and young boys. Other super hero costumes that are quite popular and suitable for Halloween 2010 are the Incredible Hulk and the Transformers. Spiderman is another of the top 10 rated super hero costumes too. Of course there are some age old favorites such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costumes and the Power Rangers costumes. Girls also have their superheroes including Wonder Woman, Bat Girl, pink Power Ranger and Super Girl.
Historical Figures
Choosing a historical figure is always a great option for a Halloween costume. Perhaps one of these most popular historical figures is the pirate. The pirate costume is highly desired amongst boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 28. The lady pirate cuts quite a dashing figure at any Halloween party. Other historical figures that are especially popular with couples are the gangster and his moll, the caveman and cavewoman. Expect up and coming historical figure costumes to include Robin Hood, medieval knights and Roman warriors.
Villains
Finally, villains are always very popular year after year. From the Disney villains such as Maleficent and Cruella DeVil to your typical vampires, werewolves and devils, these are perhaps some of the most popular Halloween costumes of all time. After all, the purpose of Halloween is to be scary and these costumes fit the bill. In 2010 expect to see lots of zombies, witches, and vampires as these have been quite popular of late in books and movies.
