Aging is inevitable, but no one wants to show their age on their skin. A variety of factors can often make skin look prematurely aged, which may cause one's confidence and self-esteem to drop. Fortunately, there are many treatments now available to help with skin aging.

Dr. Beata Rydzik, of the Center for Dermatology and Laser Surgery in Portland, Oregon, says that skin aging is a common concern for many people. "Exactly how your skin will age depends on a variety of factors, including one's diet, lifestyle, and genetics," Dr. Rydzik says, "Our skin ages just like we do, but poor personal habits, such as smoking cigarettes, poor diet, or drinking alcohol, or overexposure to sun, can accelerate the aging process of skin. This often means patients will have visible wrinkles, loose skin, or age spots."

"Fortunately, there are many options available for patients who want to correct the appearance of skin aging," says Dr. Rydzik, "Effective procedures include chemical peels, and laser skin rejuvenation, which restore a smooth, youthful appearance."

Chemical peels remove damaged external layers of skin on the face, evening the skin surface, and revealing new layers of skin. Dr. Rydzik explains there are three types of chemical peels, alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol, which offer different strengths and are used based on a patient's specific needs and desires. Chemical peels do not require anesthesia, are performed in a doctor's office, and do not require a long recovery period. Chemical peel results are visible about a week after the procedure, and will normally last for up to 2 months.

Laser skin rejuvenation uses laser technology to restore skin to a smoother, more youthful appearance. "Laser skin rejuvenation is a great, noninvasive treatment for issues, such as enlarged pores, wrinkles, age spots, or even sagging skin," says Dr. Rydzik, "We perform several different types of laser treatments, depending on a patient's skin concerns. It may require several treatments to achieve a patient's desired results, which become totally visible after a few months. Many patients report that laser skin rejuvenation completely eliminates the appearance of age spots, and various other skin concerns."

"In the past, patients had no choice but to accept the appearance of aged, damaged skin," Dr. Rydzik concludes, "That is simply no longer the case. We now offer several highly-effective treatments to correct this common problem. I encouraged patients to contact us to learn more about their treatment options."
