Obesity is a health issue faced by millions of people throughout the country. While there are several surgical procedures that can effectively correct this issue, there are not many options for patients who do not want to undergo invasive surgery. Fortunately, the REALIZE® Band is one effective, non-invasive option for patients who wish to lose weight and feel better about their body.

Dr. Jeremy Korman, of the California-based LA Bariatric Center, says that the REALIZE® Band is a safe, yet effective, alternative to more invasive surgery. Unlike other weight-loss surgeries, Dr. Korman explains, this procedure does not involve any cutting or stapling of the stomach.

Instead, the procedure is performed laparoscopically, with a flexible gastric band placed around the upper part of the stomach. During surgery, Dr. Korman creates a small opening near the belly button. The abdomen is then filled with carbon dioxide to create room for the band. A camera is then inserted through the incision, and a few additional incisions will be made to hold the band firmly in place around the stomach. The band will help reduce the amount of food that a patient can take in, which will lead to weight-loss. Dr. Korman says that many of his patients report losing a great deal of excess body fat in the first year after surgery.

Dr. Korman says that, while the REALIZE® Band is a safe procedure, there are possible risks and complications associated with the surgery. Some of the most common risks following the procedure are infection, inflammation, nausea and diarrhea. Dr. Korman discusses all of these risks with patients prior to the surgery.

According to Dr. Korman, ideal candidates for the REALIZE® Band procedure should be adults who are at least 18 years old. It is usually recommended that patients for this procedure have a body mass index (BMI) of 40, which is equivalent to being around 100 pounds overweight. Dr. Korman also notes that patients should quit smoking prior to the procedure, since smoking may increase a patient's risk for complications following surgery.

Finally, Dr, Korman says that patients who choose this procedure must be committed to making changes in their diet, exercise routine and overall lifestyle.
