Rebuilding Together Hartford is the Hartford, CT affiliate of the nationwide volunteer nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together, a group with more than 400 chapters that helps local area residents with house maintenance and repairs.
The mission of Rebuilding Together is to help people who can't help themselves, and during the organization's yearly event, teams of volunteers organize to help low-income, disabled, and elderly town residents maintain their properties. Volunteers of all skill levels and ages are encouraged to apply, and are assigned work according to their abilities.
On September 13 of 2014, Rebuilding Together Hartford cooperated with the City's own Livable Sustainable Neighborhood Initiative to organize a one-day home renovation event for low-income veterans throughout Hartford. During this event, twelve veteran-owned homes saw extensive upkeep and repair work performed by teams of volunteers.
Art Dias, owner of CT roofing contractor Eagle Rivet, has participated in Rebuilding Together events for a number of years; his experience in construction has allowed him to make a significant contribution to the effort.
During this year's veteran aid event, Mr. Dias served as House Captain for one of the volunteer teams, overseeing and coordinating technical aspects of the repairs. A House Captain's duties include selecting materials, identifying necessary skills based on repair scope, managing repair budgets, making sure the work is performed on deadline, and more.
The Cape-style house assigned to Mr. Dias's team belongs to a 60-year-old veteran homeowner and his wife, who have lived there for the past 17 years.
The repairs conducted by the team under his supervision included replacing two overhead doors and the roof of the home's adjoining garage, repairing electrical wiring in the garage, repainting the porch, replacing broken window glass, and a variety of yard work that included debris removal, gutter cleaning and plant trimming.
This doesn't exhaust the contributions made by Mr. Dias and Eagle Rivet to local anti-blight and neighborhood upkeep initiatives - this year alone, Eagle Rivet has replaced six roofs for Rebuilding Together Hartford.
Mr. Dias is proud to participate in Rebuilding Together, both personally and as part of Eagle Rivet, and is looking forward to continuing his involvement with the initiative in coming years.
