You have finally found the perfect dress to wear to the prom, picked up matching shoes, selected the right jewelry, and now you are stuck. What are you going to do with your hair? You want everything to be perfect, and your hair is going to be the biggest part of the picture, next to the dress, of course. How about a prom updo?

This prom updo is designed around a very basic and tightly crafted pony tail that is anchored at the top of the crown, with the rest of the hair sculpted to fan out and up. The base of this kind of prom updo hairstyles will hug the crown as well as the back of the head, bangs optional. This kind of prom updo hairstyles will highlight and flatter the face, as well as the dress. If your face is long and thin, then you design this prom updo so that it lays closer to the head with volume added along the sides. This style is perfect for women with oval and heart shaped faces, if not, with these updo prom hairstyles you can add ringlet tendrils around the jaw and cheeks to soften your look.

If your hair is longer than shoulder length or thick, curly and wavy, this is perfect for updo prom hairstyles, but you may need to straighten it just a little. Hair extensions are required if your hair is shorter than shoulder length. It will also take more than one set of hands to achieve, so either bring this to a stylist, or recruit a trusted friend. To get started, create a deep side part on one side of your head. Use a paddle brush to brush all of your hair back from the hairline on either side of the part to form a pony tail at the back of the crown near the top. Merge the hair on either side of the part and form a tight, angled ponytail sculpture.

Secure the pony tail with a good elastic band and spray it with some styling gel. Grab the entire tail about 2 inches down from its base. Wrap the entire tail clockwise over your hand to create a large loop with the ends on the same level as its base. Smooth and flatten the loop, and secure with pins underneath the loop. You should now have a soft bun, and some untamed ends near the base. Use your fingers to form a fan, working side to side with the untamed strands. Take your time, and pin as you go.

Use the X formation with the pins to keep the structure to stand slightly away from the head. You want a sleek, sculpted look to the structure, and if you want, you can leave some of it to form bangs that are curled over the forehead. You can gently curl some of those strands to form tendrils on either side of your head for that classic prom updo, or add some gems.

The wonderful thing about this timeless classic is that you can easily alter it to better match the entire look you want to achieve. If you want it a little edgier, play with styling wax or gel. Using the original fan fall as a base, you can also add hair extensions styled in the same fashion for a quirky layered look. And, you can tie altogether with the right jewelry on you, or in your hair, like beaded pearls, thin barrettes with bangles or even chopsticks.
