"OurConservatory.org – ‘Bringing Music Back to LA Schools, One Schoolhouse At A Time’"

OurConservatory.org, a non-profit music instrument library program for kids, now open in the Clifford Street Elementary School, 2150 Duane Street, Echo Park, California 90039 - is proud to announce two additional locations for the OurConservatory.org program set to open in September, 2010. The new libraries located at the Charles H. Kim and Elysian Heights Elementary Schools, will be open to all kids during the day accompanied by their teachers and entire class. Through their exploration of the library we hope to encourage students to pursue additional musical study offered through our after school program.

OurConservatory.org helps L.A.U.S.D. enlist volunteer community members to provide those kids interested in learning more about a particular instrument like electric guitar, keyboard or drums, a chance to join in free group lessons after school.

OurConservatory.org offers these kids a positive and creative alternative to the potentially negative influences that might await them after school.

Charles H. Kim Elementary School Principal Kerry Kehrley says, “it’s important that a program like OurConservatory.org is present in our schools today, as music and other arts programs at the elementary level will be reduced by 50 percent due to tough economic conditions.” Kehrley also notes that, “music and arts are the cornerstone of society and give children who might not be able to otherwise understand history and culture a chance to experience it firsthand.”

OurConservatory.org Founder, Neil Trama, adds, “One of the most important experiences in my childhood was when my father first put a violin in my hands.” Neil Trama adds, "that not only was there an understanding that I was going to learn how to play music, but more importantly that music was something that needs to be shared with family and friends.” Neil Trama reflects, " the violin I shared with my sisters as they also learned to play, was what planted the seed for the idea that years later became the Music Instrument Library - OurConservatory."

Board member Todd Maxwell, shares, "We are really excited to find a new home and thank LAUSD for accepting our program. Our Conservatory is a wonderful opportunity for LA's professional musicians and artists to give back to the community. We are extremely appreciative of the support we have received in LA thus far."

OurConservatory.org is looking forward to continue expanding its program to more LAUSD locations throughout the upcoming school year and is actively seeking additional charitable donations of new and used musical instruments in any condition for use in Elysian Heights and Charles H. Kim Schools. You can be a part of building OurConservatory "One Schoolhouse At A Time" through volunteering, donating instruments or organizing fundraisers to help underwrite our instrument library and instruction programs.

OurConservatory.org ‘thought for the day’: "Did you know that students who do well in music also excel in math? Research shows that taking music lessons enhances math ability. One theory is that music strengthens the neural chords that transmit information between the two hemispheres of the brain." Dr. Heidi Horsley, Clinical Psychologist and OurConservatory.org Advisory Board Member

Like a book library, OurConservatory is a music instrument library where kids, who might not otherwise have the chance to learn an instrument, explore their musical potential.
