Consumers in the timeshare industry face a lot questions but find very few answers. If you own a timeshare or know someone who does, the cost associated with ownership never quite seems to match the value of what is received. During these trying economic times, being locked into a payment for a timeshare only adds to financial difficulties.
Owners who cannot afford to pay mortgage payments and maintenance fees receive a cold should from the resorts. Collections notices, calls, and legal action await many during the holiday season who need no reminder that money is tough to come by. Even for those who are financially stable, the aversion to paying escalating fees every year for something that provides little value is strong.
Owners looking for a way out find that it can sometimes be impossible. Listing companies promise to sell but never actually do so because the resale market is nonexistent. Resorts refuse to take back timeshares from those who are struggling keep their heads above water.
Due to the difficulties associated with trying to get out, many owners continue making payments to the resorts year after year. It is clear that something must be done; however, it does not look like the government will be issuing a bailout to these consumers.
