A number of dog trainers are questioning the age old ‘dominate the dog, before it dominates you” concept.

"A number of dog trainers are questioning the age old ‘dominate the dog, before it dominates you” concept."

Pictures of President Obama, being led by the first dog, Bo, have sparked a lot of controversy among dog trainers. While everyone agrees that the Portuguese water dog needs extra training, the debate is on the most effective dog training technique.

The traditional and mostly followed technique is to establish a human dominance over the dog, i.e. teaching the dog that man is the master and it is important to be subjugated. This theory enforces human dominance through instructions that include, making them watch you eat before they do and handing out punishments for disobedience.

However there are a number of dog trainers who are increasingly questioning this form of dog training. “Dogs can be effectively trained, by positive reinforcement and a reward based training rather than the hardnosed punitive typed of training. While it is true that sometimes you may have to hand out a punishment, the type of punishment that you hand out is important” says, Mr. Lee Dobbins, of ‘Great Dogs For Pets’, a site that discusses anything and everything about dogs.

“There are basically two types of punishment; the positive and the negative. Positive punishments include giving a tug on the leash or verbally correcting the dog. Positive punishments should be avoided as much as possible. Negative punishments generally include taking away something that the dog loves. This is a better way of handling behavior problems” adds Mr.Lee Dobbins.

While dogs are affected by lack of love, there are some who harm their dogs with an overdose of love! Yes, a few years ago, the life expectancy of dogs was very high. People hardly took their dogs to the vets. This was when dogs were fed on leftovers or homemade food. Today when dogs are fed on the supposedly best commercial dog food that’s available in the market, the life expectancy of dogs is decreasing. Pet food industry in every country is the least regulated industry. Dog food generally involves low quality meat like hair, beaks, feathers, intestines, fat etc. To this are added fillers (usually sugar or sawdust) and preservatives. This is generally cooked under high temperature, which kills the essential nutrients required for your dogs, health.

“A balance diet, where all the essential and complex nutrients are given in a complete and natural form” adds, Mr.Lee Dobbins
