Un-insured britons

The summer is exciting time for everyone. We spend every possible moment preparing for it. We have saving accounts dedicated to it. Women diet and exercise for the beaches, men research the location of sports bars. That’s right, it is the summer holiday! But it could all go so horribly wrong if you are uninsured.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office nearly one in five Britons travel without travel insurance, and end up facing tens of thousands of pounds in medical and legal bills. The high number of travellers who are unprepared when going away results in preventable accidents abroad.

The FCO’s research indicated that just over 27,000 passports are lost each year, while other travellers are subjected to drink and drug-related arrests, high numbers of road traffics accidents and repatriation bills as a result of not holding adequate insurance.

Gap year students appear to the worst culprits for lack of preparation and researching their travel plans.

The British Behaviour Abroad Report from the FCO’s has listed Spain at the top of the list for consular assistance cases (5,283), followed by Thailand (957), Cyprus (736) and (Pakistan (273).

As a result of the lack of insurance, individuals find themselves with extensive medical bills as a result of these accidents abroad. The only potential for offsetting such medical costs is to make a personal injury claim if applicable.

FCO minister, Jeremy Browne advised that travellers should check out the country and its laws properly before going on holiday.

“This report [Behaviour Abroad Report] shines a light on the number of Britons who get into difficulty abroad each year”

But if you are travelling with the low cost airline provider, Ryanair, then all is not lost. As you buy that cheese and onion sandwich, you can purchase travel insurance for £15. The insurance would cover any vital medical expenses and also those emergencies that are almost expect, the loss of your wallet or other property.
Regardless, in order to avoid those accidents abroad and making personal injury claims, preparation and travel insurance is vital.
