The owner of a $350,000 diamond ring that went missing during her brief treatment stay at Bumrungrad International Hospital on October 2, 2010 has revealed that she was never asked to sign a standard hospital consent form regarding patients’ valuables.

The owner of a $350,000 diamond ring that went missing during her brief treatment stay at Bumrungrad International Hospital on October 2, 2010 has revealed that she was never asked to sign a standard hospital consent form regarding patients’ valuables. Patients are routinely asked to sign a form that states that they are not in possession of any valuables before they enter any treatment rooms.
This lapse in the hospital’s security procedures casts a new light on the case from a legal liability standpoint as there is a possibility that the hospital may now face exposure. Legal experts consulted by the BBB Network had not yet rendered an opinion on the matter pending further research into the issues involved.
A Thai female’s minor medical treatment on October 2 in one of Bumrungrad International’s private treatment rooms on the hospital’s 15th floor turned into the most costly hospital visit in her life as her expensive diamond ring somehow disappeared during her brief stay. She had removed the ring while in the private bathroom of the treatment room during a medical test and left the ring on the bathroom sink. When she returned to the bathroom from her bed approximately 10 minutes later the ring was gone.
Since only medical personnel were present in the room at the time suspicion fell upon them but to date the Thai police have not been able to gain any information about the whereabouts of the ring. The ring’s owner met with several Bumrungrad Hospital officials but no details have yet been released as to the substance of those discussions.
Although the case is still unsolved at this point, Thai police have indicated that the investigation is still open. The owners of the ring have offered a no-questions-asked reward of one million Thai baht or approximately $33,000.
Bumrungrad Hospital is widely considered to be the top hospital in Thailand and caters to many international clients as well as locals, claiming to serve one million patients a year with 40% of those coming from 190 countries around the world. The hospital was founded in 1980 and is the largest medical facility in Southeast Asia.
More details surrounding this mysterious case will be reported as they are brought to light during the continuing investigation by the BBB Network in Bangkok.
