April 18th 2011 - New measurements for data centre efficiency defined by industry alliance The Green Grid, will feature in a plenary debate at the 7th annual DataCentres 2011

The Green Grid consortium, which developed the widely used PUE metric for measuring energy efficiency in data centres, has launched new metrics to address carbon emissions and water usage. Carbon usage efficiency – CUE - is intended to help managers determine the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated in delivering work from the IT gear in a data centre facility.

The event features an in depth assessment of these new tools and includes Mark Monroe, Executive Director of The Green Grid, Andre Rouyer, Chair EMEA Liaison Committee, The Green Grid, Christina Page, Director, Climate and Energy Strategy, Yahoo! Inc, Alain Anglade, Director Data Centre Energy, ADEME [Agence de l'Environnement et de la Maitrise de l'Energie], Dr. Paolo Bertoldi, Principal Administrator, European Commission Directorate General Joint Research Centre, Institute for Environment and Sustainability and Dr. Ian F Bitterlin, Chief Technical Officer, Prism Power Ltd.

The panel will also discuss how energy resource for data centres is changing, the impact of Cloud, and a future perspective of data centre efficiency.
“CUE may become increasingly important in Europe as carbon tax laws such as the UK’s CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme begin to take effect,” commented Warwick Dunkley, Regional Director at BroadGroup, the event researcher and producer.

Water efficiency - WUE - will provide managers with a single score measurement detailing the efficiency of their water use for cooling, and the amount being used to actually support IT equipment. It will also have to take account of the quality of the water when it is returned to the environment which holds potential implications for equipment vendors.

DataCentres 2011 is Europe’s largest annual sector content event with more than 80 international speakers from a variety of disciplines spanning the ever growing data centre sector, and takes place in Nice 5-6 May. Lead Sponsors include Schneider Electric, HP Critical Facilities, Colt, TelecityGroup, M+WGroup, Migration Solutions and Sentry 42.
