Commenting on the introduction of the Santa Cruz Zoo Volunteer project, Willson Marshal, Bolivia Volunteers Administrator says,

´This is a very exciting time for us here at Bolivia Volunteers, and in the short time since we introduced the project at the Zoologico Municipal Fauna Sudamericana we have been amazed by the number of inquiries and offers of assistance we have received.

´Of course we have offered projects caring for neglected and abandoned domestic animals in several cities across Bolivia for many years, but the prospect of being able to spend time at the Santa Cruz Zoo with our indigenous wildlife – puma, llama, carpincho, tapir, pink dolphins, flamingo, condor and many more – has really fired the imagination of our volunteers.´

And Pascal Deneuve from Creuzier-le-vieux, France - currently at the Zoo on a two month volunteer placement adds.

´I´ve always been an animal lover, but of course that´s really only for dogs and cats back home – but here at the Santa Cruz Zoo I´ve had real hands-on experience of caring for much larger and exotic animals.

´At the moment I´m working on upgrading the bird enclosures, doing some building and painting. The next assignment lined up for me look at is planning a diet regime for the big cats. This place is just SO special, nothing like the zoos back home and really does need all the help it can get.´

In a recent global survey of several thousand volunteer travelers, over 75% chose South America as their preferred continent and of those, 65% commented that BOLIVIA – the poorest South American country – would be their first choice destination.

It is 10 years since the International Year of Volunteers in 2001 and through a UN General Assembly Resolution, this anniversary is being marked across the globe, with volunteering organizations world-wide promoting the values of volunteering, recognizing the value of volunteering, building and reinforcing volunteering networks, and helping individuals to realize their potential to make a real difference by sharing their time, skills and experience for the benefit of others.

The declaration of IYV+10, under the banner "Volunteer! Make a Difference", is an acknowledgement of the important role of the volunteer sector, and aims to -

Build respect, trust, understanding and solidarity through volunteering;

Raise volunteerism on the development agenda;

Build partnerships; and

Define and empower global volunteering.
