New York, NY - July 28, 2011 -- A recent report by a team of international researchers said there is evidence that eating too much red meat and processed meat raises the risk of colorectal cancer. They also found that consuming plenty of plant-based fiber reduces the risk. After conducting a review of hundreds of published studies an expert panel analyzed the evidence regarding the relationships among diet, weight, physical activity and colorectal cancer.

How much is too much red meat? The study found that there is little increased risk for people who keep their red meat intake to 18 ounces or less per week (beef, pork & lamb). People who ate 24.5 ounces per week (3.5 oz./day) had a 17% higher risk and those who consumed 49 ounces per week (7 oz./day) have a 34% higher risk.

Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel, co-authors of TurboCharged, offer advice: 1) Avoid all processed foods including processed meats. 2) Do not avoid red meat but limit consumption to less than 18 ounces per week and be sure to include or substitute white meats like chicken and turkey along with regular fish meals. 3) Increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables you eat on a daily basis. 4) Increase your daily activity and perform appropriate strength building exercises. 5) Limit alcohol consumption to 2 or less drinks per day.
