New York, NY – August 31, 2011 -- Why do so many dieters reach their weight goal, only to find that the pounds eventually return? New research from scientists at Pennsylvania State University may help explain why. They found that the behaviors that help people lose weight aren’t the same as those that help them maintain their new body.

The study was designed to determine whether two distinct sets of thought patterns and behaviors are associated with initial weight-loss (losing 10 percent of one’s body weight in one year) and long-term weight management (maintaining the loss for one year).

Based on a random telephone survey of 1,165 adults, the researchers found that there was little similarity between the two sets of thought patterns and behaviors. For example, people who followed a consistent exercise routine and/or ate plenty of low-fat sources of protein were more likely to be successful in weight maintenance, but not weight loss. Meanwhile, the people who performed different kinds of exercises or meal planning were more likely to lose weight, but not maintain the loss. The researchers concluded that dietary programs might need to offer different guidance for each specific phase.

“The problem with ‘diets’ is that they are always viewed as temporary,” say Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel, co-authors of the amazing rapid fat loss book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). “Most diets are solely focused on losing weight. More so, their typical faulty foundation is the restriction of foods and calories along with unsustainable amounts of exercise. Once the goal is reached, there is no realistic plan to maintain the loss.” TurboCharged, is a totally holistic, optimal health and lifestyle system that results in rapid fat-loss and long-term maintenance of a healthy, lean and fabulous looking body.
