Thoroughness, awareness and sharpness are the three qualities which B schools look for in prospective students for their MBA programmes. This was emphasized by Dr. Sudhir K Jain, Head, IIT Delhi DMS while interacting with the MBA aspirants at the HT Education-MBAUniverse.com Mission MBA Workshop on CAT 2011.

Addressing the gathered students on the topic ‘What do top B-schools look for in a candidate’ Dr. Jain said, “Before you decide to do MBA you should have an idea about MBA education and why you want to do an MBA. Many a times during interviews, when we ask ‘why you want to do MBA’, the candidates can’t give a proper answer.”

Describing the qualities of right candidates Dr. Jain said, “Ideally we look for students who have a sharp mind and high reaction ability. You should know what is going on in the world around you. You may not know a particular answer, but you should be sharp enough to know how to tackle that question.”

The other qualities which you must possess according to Dr. Jain are quick grasping ability and ability to take challenges.

Dr. Jain also mentioned that while it is a major task for the top B-schools to choose the right students who can take the legacy of that B-School forward, it is also important for the aspirants to select the right B-School which can hone their talent.

Taking the opportunity Dr. Jain also clarified on the myth that the DMS of IITs are not just meant for engineers.

“Students of Architecture, Pharmacy, Agriculture Engineering graduates or Masters in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Application, Electronic Science, Environmental Science, Operations Research, Computational or Information Science, Agriculture, Commerce, Economics, CA or ICWA have also bright chances of making to the DMSs of IITs,” Dr. Jain said.

While talking about the scrapping of JMET and switching over to CAT for admissions 2012 and beyond Dr. Jain said, “Traditionally IITs used to admit the students through JMET and now the exam has been abolished. IIT Bombay and Delhi initiated the JMET exam. It was mainly meant for engineers who wanted to do MBA. We did not advertise it much and the GATE circulars were circulated only in the engineering colleges due to which we missed out a lot of talented candidates. Then we also realized that we were wasting lot of time and money in conducting JMET. So we decided to join CAT 2011.”
