Article marketing is becoming a dying traffic generation method. A few years ago, an online business can write and distribute an article to directories and can then expect a herd of visitors to their websites.

Alan Cheng, owner of TrafficBeast.com, a blog on traffic generation strategies ( http://www.trafficbeast.com ) for online businesses, noticed that many of his clients are struggling with article marketing.

“One of the main reasons why people can’t just write and distribute an article for traffic is because of the effectiveness of article directories. Around two years ago, article directories could get visitors to read your articles easily, because they had a lot of traffic. It’s a totally different story today”, explained Cheng.

Article marketing is a traffic generation method that involves distributing an article to many directories and getting the readers to check out their biography and clicking on a link to their website.

Online entrepreneurs use article marketing ( http://www.trafficbeast.com/howto/article-marketing ) to generate leads and make sales because it is simple to do and they can notice an immediate rush of visitors to their websites.

Part of the reason for the decrease of traffic from article marketing is due to article directories losing their high rankings with search engines.

Google changed their ranking algorithm in the past few months (Panda update) and it has hit article directories hard. Articles from article directories are no longer ranking well in the search engine listings. This means a decrease in traffic for article marketers.

“One of the reasons why Google made this ranking algorithm change is because of the poor articles which are shown on the first or second page of search results. Google wants to deliver relevant and quality information to users. Having a poorly written article without much substance, is giving the users a bad user experience”, Cheng said.

Due to the effectiveness of article marketing, many marketers have used the method and abused it. Articles are written quickly with no regards to the quality of the content. Some marketers write several articles a day to submit to article directories.

When that many articles are written in a day and on a regular basis, it is impossible to produce a good quality article. It is not what article marketing is about.

“Another reason why article marketing is not generating traffic for many people is because of the poor quality content. When a person reads an article it doesn’t give him much value, it’s highly unlikely that he will read your resource box to find out who you are and click on the link to your website”, remarked Cheng.

Alan emphasized that one of the most important things he teaches his clients is how to do article marketing correctly. This involves how to write an article to build trust with the readers and how to market it since article directories are not that effective anymore.
