Troy, Michigan October 22, 2011 -- Fashion Designer and Humanitarian William Malcolm created the William Malcolm Man Of Style And Substance Scholarship Contest three years ago in an effort to impact the young men from his home state of Michigan www.WilliamMalcolmManOfStyleAndSubstance.com

The underlining purpose of this initiative is to provide mentorship and reward scholastic achievement. The young men are selected as semi-finalists based upon their high school grade point average and answers to several questions that included education, community service and philanthropic goals.

The young men will participate in several events during Man Of Style And Substance Scholarship weekend (October 28th-30th). Highlights of which are a private meet and great event at Beans & Cornbread Restaurant, a full day scholarship conference at Marygrove College at which they will receive instruction from men on various topics that will include: financial literacy, chivalry, educational success, business etiquette and social responsibility. The weekend will close with a fellowship service at Family Victory Fellowship Church.

The contest will conclude on November 18th at the third annual Man Of Style And Substance Selection Gala. At the Gala the young men will compete for the title of the 2011 William Malcolm Man Of Style And Substance High School Edition. The winner will win prizes and a cash award that will total over $8,000 all of which will be used to cover his senior costs and activity fees including a prom package complete with a bespoke tuxedo or suit designed by William Malcolm himself. www.WilliamMalcolmCollection.com

The young men that participate in the scholarship contest will grow to understand that true symbols of manhood are not necessarily found on television or popular culture. They will also learn that a true man, a man of Style And Substance is defined by how he responds to the successes and adversities that life can bring. These young men will be willing to learn that successful men are defined by how they honor their responsibilities, respect women and care for their families and the communities in which they live. The young men will realize the importance of seeking direction, guidance and mentoring from successful men that have come before them. So that they can, when ready take all that they have learned and become a mentor themselves.

"Our community must creatively address the issue of our children growing up with without fathers and positive male role models," says William Malcolm Founder of The Man Of Style And Substance High School Scholarship Contest" The impact of fatherlessness on American communities is devastating and our children are losing this battle”

William feels that a man’s success in life is directly related to how well he is perceived by others as well as his ability to transcend life’s obstacles and challenges. William’s goal with his annual contest is to hopefully influence the young men that enter the contest by exposing them to successful men, situations and opportunities that will help to either reinforce or introduce to them how to present themselves to the world.

The young men (Michigan High School Seniors) will have various meeting to attend and tasks to complete that will focus on the following. Their efforts will be judged throughout the contest based upon the observation of the Man of Style and Substance Committee Members in the following categories:
1. Education Goals
2. Chivalry towards woman
3. Community service
4. Conflict Resolution
5. Gentlemanly Etiquette/ Personal Presentation skills
6. Responsibility towards their family
7. Success strategies
8. Financial responsibility

The William Malcolm Man of Style & Substance Scholarship Contest began in September of 2009. The annual contest starts with a call for entries that have yielded over 500 culturally diverse entrants from across Michigan within the last two years. The entries are then narrowed down to 20 semi-finalists based on their responses to several questions ranging from educational goals, community service involvement, favorite Michigan based sports team and their idea of what constitutes chivalry towards women. The contest has successfully highlighted and raised awareness for over 60 local nonprofit organizations that were prominently featured during the contest and showcased at the Man Of Style And Substance Selection Gala’s that were held at the Historic Whitney Mansion located in Mid Town Detroit (2009) and the Charles H. Wright Museum located in the Cultural District of Detroit (2010).
