The events in the past years have shown that even a nation as powerful as the United States of America is not immune to disasters. Natural calamities such as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Gustav indicate that the US can succumb to natural disasters, while tragic events such as 9/11 show that the country is also susceptible to man-made disasters. These events have led to thousands of casualties and millions of dollars lost due to property damage. These tragic events have put emphasis on the importance of emergency response preparedness.

While the government is making every effort to pull out all stops when it comes to emergency response preparedness, each individual will also need to do their part in order to make sure that they have emergency preparedness strategies to fall back on should disaster strike. The federal government itself is encouraging people to orient themselves with these strategies should disaster hit, given the possibility that rescue teams may not be able to respond immediately. Some of the tips experts have suggested in emergency response preparedness include:

Getting acquainted with emergency response information. The most important thing that people can do in emergency response preparedness is to educate themselves as much as possible in what they can do should an emergency situation arise. Make sure to be acquainted with the disaster preparedness plans set by the local government, since they may arrange evacuations if needed.

Have emergency disaster kits at the ready. Home office disaster kits are an imperative part of disaster preparedness plans. Some of the things that should be included in the kit include at least three days worth of food, water (about one gallon of water per), first aid supplies (such as bandages, scissors, gauze pads, cotton balls, antibiotic ointments, safety pins, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tweezers, and over-the-counter medications), blankets, flashlights, spare batteries, a battery-powered radio, matches, and extra sets of clothes.

Come up with an evacuation plan. In worst-case scenarios, one may need to leave his or her home to seek safety elsewhere. As such, be sure to orient everyone about the evacuation plan so that everyone will know what to do in case the worst happens.

Disasters can happen without warning. While the US is prepared to meet different disasters, each individual also has the responsibility to take care of his or her own family and property in case of calamities. The tragic events that have happened show the price of complacency. Emergency response preparedness is important so that each person will have a fighting chance of survival should anything hit them.
