December 5, 2011 - The 12 Step approach to drug and alcohol treatment has seen widespread use for the better part of a century, and in some cases the success stories can be amazing, but studies show that this strategy does not work for a large number of people. Just as no doctor would try only one method to heal all of his patients, drug and alcohol addictions can and should be treated by a variety of methods, say experts, until a person is fully able to break the chains of addiction once and for all. Many new non 12 step rehab programs are now available across the country and those who have not found the success they wanted in 12 step programs are being advised to give these alternative programs a try. With new methods to help addicts fight back against the pressures that lead them to drink or use, many are finding that addiction does not have to be a permanent way of life for them and that help which works is available to them. This can make an enormous difference in the lives who have failed in 12 Step programs and wondered if there was anything left that they could do in order to finally find the peace and security they want.
Part of the reason that the 12 Step approach does not work for everyone is that it has a heavy reliance on group therapy, something a lot of people are simply uncomfortable with. In addition, the fact that it relies on religious or pseudo spiritual beliefs can make some people uncomfortable because they are not interested in following a faith based path to healing. For these people, the long-term non 12 step rehabs have a lot to offer because they are using more science and a great deal less spirituality in their tackling of addictions. The right approach for one person, say addiction specialists, is not necessarily going to be the right approach for the next person. In order to actually free themselves of the addiction in a permanent way, solutions must be tried out in order to give that person and those who care about them the peace that they deserve to have in their lives.
