Experts have predicted that after a summer of sport and royal celebrations, the UK will experience a baby boom.
The London Olympics, UEFA Euro 2012 and Diamond Jubilee will act as ‘cultural aphrodisiacs’ and trigger a British baby boom, according to a university professor.
Ellis Cashmore of Staffordshire University has forecast that the birth rate in Britain will soar if Team GB wins a string of medals at the Games as a mood of ‘euphoria’ sweeps the country.
The professional envisages that the UK will feel a spike in the birth rate in spring 2013 and if the prediction comes true, the effect on the baby retail industry will be colossal with more Britons buying baby gifts and toys for excited mums and dads.
Statistics concur that national events act as ‘cultural aphrodisiacs’. Findings show that before 2003, births in England and Wales had dropped in over 10 years. However, nine months to a year after the Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee, England’s football team reached the World Cup quarter-final, and Tim Henman reached the tennis semi-final at Wimbledon, the birth rates rose by over 13,000.
Lecturer Cath Mercer of the University College London agreed that any holiday weekend which gives people the time to relax and have sex could lead to a baby boom.
