In a recent study of Zeltiq's CoolSculpting body contouring treatment it was noted that patient satisfaction with results ranked among the highest of similar treatments. The study published in the August issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, shows that among its positive attributes CoolSculpting is gaining popularity among men as well as women.

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure using cooling technology to freeze and eliminate fat cells without surgery. It has been discovered that fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the overlying skin and surrounding tissues, CoolSculpting lowers the temperature of these fat cells to eliminate them through a natural biological process known as apoptosis, without causing scar tissue or damage to the skin, nerves or surrounding tissues.

The most recent study showed that with 823% more CoolSculpting treatments delivered in 2012 than in 2010 patients are seeking a way to minimize fat without surgery. "Cryolipolysis is not only safe and effective for nonsurgical localized fat removal, but also provides high patients satisfaction levels," says lead author and Plastic Surgery Practice editorial advisory board member W. Grant Stevens, MD. Dr. Stevens went on to note that when applied properly and meticulously CoolSculpting results are comparable to those of liposuction.

The surprise takeaway from the study was the amount of men interested in shrinking subcutaneous fat via Cryolipolysis. Of the 528 patients treated 24% were men.

Many patients favor CoolSculpting to other procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical because there is no downtime and it is considerable less expensive than liposuction with similar results, according to Stevens.

Fort Lauderdale's Skin Center offers CoolSculpting to men and women in about an hour. "Results are dramatic," says Skin Center's Dr. Roger H. Stewart, a CoolSculpting specialist. "Patients can expect, on average, about 20% reduction of fat in the treated areas. The results could be evident in as little as three weeks after the procedure."
