Emek Security and Workforce Training Initiative are teaming up to offer efficient on-the-job training in the security services industry. EMEK Security is providing internships available to the members of the community for security officer training. Beyond training, EMEK Security and Workforce Training Initiative are providing job opportunities through engaging with and involving the local community.

EMEK Security provides hands-on job training in areas from mall security to work patrolling in order to give young people experience in various security training jobs. This training includes EMEK’s de-escalation techniques, teaching them how to speak with the public first over physical intervention. This community-focused approach to both security services and training is a unique offering in Connecticut, pioneered by Bill Okwuosa, owner of EMEK Security. Mr. Okwuosa’s professional background and education in mental health counseling brings a singular and valuable perspective to the security training partnership with Workforce Training Initiative. Mr. Okwuosa says “EMEK’s techniques for de-escalation, particularly how to speak with the public as a preferred response to physical intervention, provide these interns with skills that will make them highly sought after in the security field, particularly for educational and religious institutions and places of business.”

Together, EMEK and Workforce Training are helping to transition people from the program into full-time security officer jobs. They work in small class sizes where there is less competition, and teamwork is more encouraged and managed. They simulate a classroom like small security company - each company has about 10 to 15 guards at each time. With this on-the-job style training students are able to learn security tactics including crowd control communications (particularly with family groups), crisis intervention if necessary, and use of de-escalation tactics and training.

Trainees look forward to finding permanent positions with either EMEK Security or other security companies in the surrounding area. Students also have the potential to transition to postsecondary education such as a criminal justice program in college. Nearly 70% of the students are placed with permanent jobs after on-the-job security training and many others go on to further their education. Many students with a negative history have been able to turn their lives around and get well-paying jobs.

EMEK Security and Workforce Training Initiative hope to make students competitive in the workforce after job training. Small classrooms, planned to accommodate 30 students over the next 12 months, allow for the instructor to know everyone’s background and impart their experience in a more personal setting. Mr. Okwuosa is looking to provide services for steady growth that will be taking place in the security industry over the next few years. His focus on helping the community and enabling citizens to avoid the pitfalls of negative choices has been his primary motivation in launching EMEK Security. “It takes community support to make a better community,” says Mr. Okwuosa, “for those not actually seeking training that want to help support this, recommend small security companies like EMEK to provide security services so that there is a steady growth in employment opportunities.” Bill hopes to see students gain employment with school systems due to his training with an emphasis on de-escalation, and earn security a better name than its primary associations with the physical force aspects of security.

Director of Workforce Training Initiative, Donnell Hilton, speaks highly of the potential for the partnership, saying that EMEK Security has “boosted the amount of training and skills for the students and given them the tools necessary to be competitive in the workforce.”
