India, CHANDIGARH The country's leading lighting lamps component maker, Punjab Lighting Aids Ltd., an OEM for world's three largest lighting appliance manufacturers, is increasing its manufacturing capacity to 3.5 billion components from 2 billion at its Mohali manufacturing unit. The company has tied up with Philips to set up another unit at Baroda with a manufacturing capacity of 3.5 billion components to tap the burgeoning demand in lighting appliances in domestic and as well as the overseas market,

A part from global majors namely Philips, Osram and Ohio-based GE, Punjab Lighting is catering to components requirements of other players in organized sector including Crompton Greaves, US-based Phoenix, Wipro Lighting, Surya Roshni, Bajaj Lamps and Havells. The company manufactures four critical components of lighting lamps including wires ad components, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, aluminum lamp caps for CFL, Halogen, GLE, T-8 and T-12 for the clients.

The Baroda plant would commence manufacturing of components for Philips domestic clientele for florescent lighting appliances, T-8, T-12 by September 2008 and by 2012 Philips would commence sourcing components for CFL lighting appliances for overseas markets, Vinay Kumar Gupta, chairman and managing director, Punjab Lighting Aids P Ltd told that the company has set up R&D facility at its Mohali unit to cut cost on manufacture of components.

The company, that took to manufacture of electric lamps components in 1992 with installed capacity of 65 million pieces, has steadily increased its manufacturing capacity over to years to 2,500 million per annum at present.

"The CFL market that stands at Rs 1,200 crore at present, is growing 40% annually and the company's endeavours is to tap this segment apart from demand for normal lighting appliances, "Mr Gupta said. "Post expansions, 22% of components would be meant for exports whereas at present 16% of components are procured for exports,” Mr Gupta said. He added that the company also supplies lighting components to Phoenix and Japan based Solam for car beams.

"Punjab Lighting is also focusing on components for halogen lighting appliances that have found huge market in multiplexes, BPOs etc.” Mr Gupta said.
